Paula Gutierrez, 26, Learns Her Fate - Life in Prison
June 23, 2004: Paula Gutierrez, the Bay area woman whose boyfriend shot and killed a Tampa Police Officer, learned her fate. She will spend the rest of her life in prison for her role in the shooting death of Lois Marrero. The 19-year Tampa Police Department veteran was gunned down following a bank robbery on July 6, 2001.
New Litigation in Paula Gutierrez Case Focuses on Police Choppers
May 23: Lois Marrero's family is fighting back. They plan on suing the city for what they call a disregard of officers' safety. Their attorney Richard Hirsch talked about the day Marrero was shot and killed while chasing Gutierrez's boyfriend, Nestor DeJesus. "The observer and other members of the flight crew went to lunch," said Hirsch. "There had been a birthday party." That left only one police chopper pilot in the sky to relay information about suspects on the ground to other officers giving chase. In their complaint to the city, the attorneys say the City of Tampa was "reckless and had a willful disregard for the safety of its officers." They say chopper pilots have to focus on flying, not observing, and absence of an observer in the chopper may have contributed to Lois Marrero's death.

"Till Death Do Us Part" by Mickie Mashburn ~ Advocate Feb. 19, 2002
Lois Marrero and I met in 1986 while working at the Tampa police department. Lois had been an officer for four years, and I was a new recruit. Initially Lois and I were just friends. I admired her because she was so very passionate about life. Eventually she and I fell in love and realized we were soul mates. One day in 1990 I asked her, "Would you consider spending the rest of your life with me?" She told me, "I would like that very much." Lois moved in, and on May 25, 1991, we held a commitment ceremony at the Metropolitan Community Church in St. Petersburg. That was the happiest day of my life. I know she felt the same way. For more than 10 years we were inseparable, then came July 6, 2001.

July 16, 2002: One year ago, Tampa Officer Lois Marrero was killed in the line of duty leaving behind colleagues, friends, family and a life partner of 11 years, Officer Mickie Mashburn. Lois' death brought not only grief, but the sad realization that the life she and Mickie shared for more than a decade was of no legal consequence. Mickie would not receive the pension benefits due a survivor. At a time of her deepest grief, Mickie's world has become a maze of paperwork, legal battles and conflict.
