SCHLESSINGER
TO SPEAK AT CONVENTION
INSULT TO LGBT FOSTER CHILDREN EVERYWHERE!
Laura Schlessinger, with a Ph.d in physiology, not psychology or
psychiatry,
is at it again. Apparently, right-wing allies of
Schlessinger invited to her
speak as the keynoter of a Sept. 20-21
convention, being held in Palm
Springs, representing social service and
mental health workers who work with
foster children in Southern California,
known as the Southern Counties
Placement Committee (SCPC).
Please consider joining social service and mental health workers who
believe
in appropriate care for kids to protest this insult to their
professions.
Ask yourself these questions --
What kind of
mental health or social service professional would call any
Lesbian or Gay,
let alone Gay kids, "biological errors"?
Answer: "Dr." Laura
Schlessinger
Despite the recommendations of the American Psychiatric
Assocation and the
American Psychological Association, what kind of mental
health professional
would still insist on calling Lesbians and Gays
"deviant"?
Answer: "Dr." Laura Schlessinger
What kind of
mental health or social service professional would play into
bigoted
stereotypes by claiming Gay men are disproportionately pedophiles,
despite
numerous studies showing the exact opposite?
Answer: You guessed
it.
So, to invite her to be the keynote speaker at this conference is not
only an
insult
to the entire lesbian and gay (LGBT) community, but also
to the mental health
profession who has taken her to task on several of her
opinions.
To protest the SCPC decision to sponsor Schlessinger's
unprofessional advice,
please send POLITE but FIRM messages to one of the
SCPC representatives who
invited her:
Greg Dinsmor, co-chair of the
conference -

phone him at (909) 487-2674 ext. 228
The private non-profits, which
are the agencies that the southern counties
placement committee place
children with, are overseen by the California State
department of social
services, community care licensing division, which is
directed by, Rita
Saenz, appointed by California Gov. Gray Davis. One of
Saenz's staffers is
on the committee that solicited Schlessinger.
Please e-mail
protests to Ms. Saenz at

governor at

Another
TV Program on
Protest Against Dick Devine
Recently we were informed
by Chicago Access Network Television that they have
produced another program
on the "Protest Against Police Brutality and Racism"
in Rogers Park on June
2nd. This is a different program from the one produced
by CAN-TV's Labor
Beat which aired last month.
The Chicago Anti-Bashing Network along with
handful of other groups played a
leading role in pulling together an ad hoc
coalition of close to 40 community
organizations to protest States Atty Dick
Devine's central role in
obstructing the fight against police brutalityand
misconduct. The protest
featured victims of police brutality and their
family members speaking out
against Devine - including in front of his house
on Pratt Avenue. The show
will be broadcast at 1 p.m., Sunday, September 9th
on Cable TV Channel
21.

"Formed
in response to three September '98 anti-gay bashings in the "Boy's
Town"
neighborhood… [we] respond to all serious hate crimes, no matter which
scapegoated group is targeted. We will actively seek out and work with
individuals and organizations in other communities to assist them in
responding to hate crimes which target them. Only by the active involvement
of grass roots people from all communities can we isolate the bigots and
thus
lessen hate crimes."
