http://www.365gay.com/newscontent/090801enza.htm (September 8, Toronto) She came in third in a race of 28 for the Toronto mayor's seat, but it looks like Enza 'Supermodel' Anderson, the city's most famous drag queen won't be running in the next election. The city is hiking election registration fees by 900%. Toronto's administrative committee said it is trying to weed out frivolous mayoral candidates. Toronto council will vote on the proposal next month and there is little doubt it will pass. Anderson says her campaign last year was anything but frivolous, but she says it's too rich for her now. The new fee for candidates to throw their hats (or wigs) into the ring is $1,000. The next civic mayoralty race is in 2003. Even running for councillor is more expensive. Up to $500, up from $100. When told of the new fees, Anderson said, "Oh my God, I would not have been able to generate that kind of money. I ran my whole campaign on $300. I had one campaign sign and a great pair of legs." Her third place showing was well behind the winner, Mel Lastman. Still she managed to get more than 13,500 votes on a platform of improved facilities for the homeless, more frequent garbage collection, and more checks on the city's water system. The often blonde and sometimes auburn haired Anderson who is best known for her five inch spike heels said she intends to fight the hike. "Suddenly only the rich can participate. It's sad," Anderson said. But, Councillor David Soknacki said, "Let's face it. If you can't raise $1,000, do you really have the ability to campaign for mayor in a city of 2.8 million people?" |
