Male Manager of Women's Football Team Quits After Lesbian Affairs
January 8, 2003

The male manager of a top women's football team has quit because he says lesbian affairs have destroyed their team spirit.

Barney Davidson, a former Leicester City player, has walked out on Gretna women's football team after five years.

He told the Daily Record: "I'm gutted it has come to this but I've just had enough. If one girl is with a player then goes off with someone else, the two girls fall out and I've got a problem.

"Out of 17 players I would say about eight are lesbian or have boyfriends as well. Some of them would deny it but I know because I have been involved with the team for so long."

Davidson says he has spent more than £20,000 on the team since taking over as manager. His daughter Amie is captain of the team but he said that she was not one of the lesbian players.

Last year they won the Northern Women's League and they are currently fourth in the Northern Combination League which includes Leeds United and Manchester United.

Midfielder Fiona Buglass agreed: "Players having relationships have caused friction. Players wouldn't be speaking and there would be an atmosphere and we wouldn't pull together as a team."
