(November 29, Toronto) An American hustler has been handed a nine year sentence in the killing of a Toronto antiques dealer.
The body of 49 year old Neil Parker was found in his apartment on Homewood Avenue in the city's Gay Village in April of last year.
The court was told that Christopher Partak had beaten, then strangled Parker. When Parker was dead, the college educated prostitute put the body in a bathtub and packed it with ice.
Partak then went on a party spree. He attempted to clean out the man's bank accounts and spent the next ten days going to clubs in the village. Every night he returned to the condominium to sleep and to put more ice in the bathtub to preserve Parker's body.
Finally he attempted to make Parker's death appear to be an accident or suicide by slashing the man's throat.
Crown prosecutor Calvin Barry told the court: "He wanted the body to deteriorate faster so it would smell and be found."
Evidence showed the pair had met at Sneakers a hangout for hustlers on the Yonge Street strip. The pair had taken a taxi home where an argument broke out.
"I regret all that has happened. I know I can't change anything ... I'm deeply sorry," Partak told Epstein and the packed courtroom before being sentenced.
Barry provided 12 victim impact statements from Parker's friends and family. Parker's former partner of 17 years, Kalvin Wannamaker, described him as a loving, caring man who was always there to help others.
Partak pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder but guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. Madam Justice Gloria Epstein sentenced Partak to nine years in prison minus time served since his April, 2000, arrest.
