Join local chapters of Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays in a "kettle protest" to educate the Salvation Army about the danger of their discriminatory policies towards gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) people.
Print out these buck slips (you'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader) and drop them in Salvation Army kettles in lieu of donations throughout the holiday season. This project was conceived by PFLAG Genesee County, Michigan and has been adopted by many of PFLAG’s 470 affiliates nation-wide. (if you don't have Acrobat Reader, try this low-resolution version front | back)
Mary Scholl, President of PFLAG’s Genesee County chapter says, “We support organizations working to address poverty in our communities. However, we cannot support an organization that discriminates against our loved ones. We intend to give to charitable organizations that understand and accept gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons as equal citizens, entitled to the same consideration as every other person.”
Plans to use the Salvation Army’s red kettles as an educational vehicle were already underway when the national Salvation Army derailed a new policy of their western division granting benefits to Salvation Army employees’ domestic partners. Recently the Salvation Army announced a new national policy denying their divisions the power to set employee benefits and limiting coverage to spouses and dependent children.
The kettle protest idea spread via e-mail and soon other PFLAG groups had signed on. Donna Blaha, President of PFLAG Glenview, Illinois, notes that “typically I’ll drop some money into a kettle each time I see it. But after the Salvation Army’s very public actions this year against the GLBT community, I’ll think of my lesbian daughter and gay son and drop in a reminder bill instead.”
Thanks to PFLAG Genesee County for their “reminder bill” graphic. For more information on the project, visit their website.
Join others nationwide in sending the Salvation Army a message this year. Drop a reminder bill in the next kettle you see. Donate instead to charitable organizations that treat GLBT people as equal citizens.
