(December 13, Washington) As expected, Dick Armey, the Majority Leader in the House of Representatives announced Wednesday he will retire when his term ends in 2003

In his eight years in the leadership post he has constantly opposed gay rights legislation.  Gay rights lobby group Human Rights Campaign annually rates members of Congress.  Armey consistently was given a grade of zero.

HRC's David Smith said,  "You can't get any lower...He and Tom DeLay are the lowest of the low."

The former college economics professor rose from near obscurity to conservative vanguard during his nine House terms.

DeLay, the GOP whip, is drumming up support to succeed Armey as Majority Leader.

Armey's son, Scott, is considering running for his father's Texas seat.
