(December 19, Sydney) A mail campaign by gay rights groups in Western Australia has swamped a right wing group that fought gay equality legislation in the state parliament.
The legislation is expected to become law in the New Year. It has passed the legislature but still must approved by the Upper House which will be recalled January 22.
Passage of the bill infuriated the Australian Family Association which declared war on the government and opposition supporters of the legislation.
After Democrats Senator Brian Greig suggested a mail in campaign against the AFA, people began sending the conservative Christian group hundreds of envelopes many of them stuffed with toilet paper and copies of the new bill.
There has been so much mail, the Post Office says it can't handle it all.
It is accusing Greig of mounting a " nuisance" campaign and is threatening to take him to court.
Australia Post spokesperson Ian Leggoe says the situation is a first in Australia.
