Bishops Fight
Jamaica Gay Rights Proposal
by Gay.com / PlanetOut.com Network
Caribbean Roman Catholic bishops have
denounced a recommendation by Jamaica to decriminalize homosexual acts,
according to the Jamaica Gleaner newspaper.
Last week a Jamaican government-appointed committee on human
rights recommended that homosexual acts in private between consenting adults
should not be considered criminal.
Responding to the committee's proposal on behalf of
Caribbean bishops, Monsignor Richard Albert said, "There is an obvious
consistency in the Old and New Testament salvation history about the moral
unacceptability of homosexual relations."
Though not illegal in other parts of the English-speaking
Caribbean, homosexuality is "frowned upon" in the region, according to a Reuters
news report.
