December 20, Dallas:  The head of the Salvation Army in Texas says the gay community has it all wrong.

Capt. Tom Rainwater went into damage control Wednesday, attempting to take the steam off a national GLBT protest begun by a Michigan PFLAG mother that is estimated to be costing the Army thousands of dollars..

Notes put in the Sally Anne Red Kettles have included expressions about homophobia and bigotry, Rainwater admits.

"We have received a good amount of them," he said, but would not  say how much donations are down this year.

Rainwater said that the rescinding of domestic partner benefits that were to be offered staff employees in four western states was not a rejection of gays and lesbians.

"The homosexual community is really saying that we hate them, and that's not the case," said Rainwater, commanding officer of the Amarillo Corps Unit of The Salvation Army. "We reach out in Christian love ... and we lead people to the Lord. We do identify homosexuality as a very real sin, and it's against God's will."

The Red Kettle Protest began in Michigan but quickly spread across the US and into Canada.
