(June 1, Toronto) A Catholic school trustee in Durham Region, east of Toronto, has resigned after he was accused of sending a homophobic email.
Stan Karwowski sent the email as a reply to one sent by Jason Bradley, 30, in support of Marc Hall, the high school student who took the board to court winning the right to bring his boyfriend to the prom.
Bradley had sent messages to each of the trustee's email addresses at the board.
"I had written him saying that the board shouldn't use religion to justify hate and I guess he didn't like that," Bradley told the paper.
In Karwowski's reply, the trustee called Bradley a "faggot," The Toronto Sun reports.
The reply came after a Superior court judge granted Hall an injunction preventing the board from stopping the teen from attending the dance with his boyfriend at the time.
The issue of whether the board has the right to bar same-sex couples from attending school functions must still be decided in a separate trial.
Karwowski's email said: "'Whatever, faggot. It ain't over till the fat lady sings", Bradley said.
While Karwowski admitted to The Sun that he used an "inappropriate word," he would not say what the word was.
After Karwowski's resignation Board chairman Mary Anne Martin said she was "disturbed" by Karwowski's message, and said the board "disassociates" itself from the comments.
