(New York) Britain's most famous alcoholic party pair have been named honorary citizens of New York. Absolutely Fabulous stars Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders are in the Big Apple to celebrate NY Pride this weekend.
Saunders, the show's creator, is a gay icon. She and Lumley will be featured in Sunday's big parade down Fifth Avenue.
In a ceremony at New York City Hall, Whoopi Goldberg presented them with special gay community human rights award.
Goldberg said she had no desire to sleep with the decadent duo, but joked: "I've been on both sides of the block. Actually I'm in the middle right now."
New York State Senate Democratic leader Martin Connor said: "Absolutely Fabulous has huge appeal to the LGBT community, but even more important than laughs, the show has depicted these disenfranchised communities in positive and affirming ways and that is helpful in the struggle for civil rights."
Lumley said she thought the reason may be even more basic. She credits the show's mixture of "glamour, fashion and showing off".
Tonight, the pair will help judge an Edina and Patsy look-alike contest at Manhattan's fashionable XL nightclub.
Journalist and lesbian rights campaigner Ann Northrop received a community civil rights award at the city hall ceremony.
