The former Married With Children star is even rumoured to have gone through a "wedding ceremony" with her fictional lover.

But Applegate has been dating actor Jonathan Schaech for two years, and says they are deliriously happy.

She said:"I am not anti-gay but I have no idea how these things happen. You can see the expression on people's faces when I meet them, ' is she or isn't she?'

"There still seems to be some hangover from these stories which went around about me. So, to clear things up once and for all, I am not married to anyone, in particular not another woman.

"I suppose the fact I am still single is enough to get tongues wagging. I just accept that this kind of stuff goes with the territory."
