Arrest
May 5, 2001
A 19-year-old student has been arrested in
Egypt for allegedly offering his services as a sex partner to rich Arabs
on the internet.
The case is the third prosecution in Egypt this
year for attempting to procure sex with other men on the web.
Ahmed
Ibrahim Abu el-Dahab was arrested in a Cairo cafe. He was expecting to
meet a man who had replied to his internet ad.
The man turned out
to be an undercover police officer. Abu el-Dahab has been charged with
committing an indecent act. He is also accused of posting obscene photos
of himself on his home page. If found guilty, he could face up to three
years in jail.
Last month, three men were accused of starting
internet sites with pornographic pictures, and encouraging homosexual
relations. In February, a Cairo criminal court jailed a computer engineer
for 15 months and an accountant for three months for advertising sexual
services on the web.
