Tampa Bay Coalition
"Fighting for GLBT Civil
Rights"
June 10, 2001
Dear TBC E-List Members
I ask for your support for the ExxonMobil
Boycott and to add one of our ExxonMobil Boycott Banners to your web site
or email. By doing so, you are showing all who visit your site or
receive email your support for GLBT Civil Rights.
Boycotts are a right and has
been used by many in their struggle to gain their civil rights and in
opposition to
discrimination. Most notably was the
successful boycott started after Rosa Parks refused to sit in the back of a bus,
because of the color of her skin. Calling for this boycott of Exxon Mobil Corp.
is a last resort. After the pleas of 24 U.S. Congressman, Exxon Mobil Corp.
Shareholders, Employee Pro-Rights Groups and GLBT Organizations re-instatement
of Mobil's domestic partners benefits and non-discrimination based on sexual
orientation policy. These benefits and policy were in effect
for Mobil employees prior to the merger and
takeover by Exxon, Which Exxon saw fit to
eliminate upon gaining control of Mobil in December of 1999. This was a step
back for GLBT rights and protections in the workplace. It sends a message
to other companies with such benefits and policy that stripping these away from
GLBT's is acceptable business practices. This message represents a threat to
GLBT's Rights in the workplace and we can not allow to go unchallenged.
After years of shareholders proposals for
re-instatement of these policy and benefits being voted down. Due to pressure by
Exxon's CEO and company officials who have strongly opposed these proposals. In
an effort to convince ExxonMobil to reverse their stance and to prevent other
companies from following ExxonMobil's lead. Some GLBT Organizations have joined
together in calling for a boycott of ExxonMobil's products and
services. We ask for your support of those companies that
endorse equality in the workplace, that have benefits and policy that
enforce such equality.
Oil Companies with written
non-discrimination of sexual orientation policy and domestic partners
benefits:
AMOCO
BP
Chevron
Shell
Those who prohibit discrimination based
on sexual orientation are
ARCO~Atlantic Richfield
Sunoco
Texaco.
TBC asks you support of these
companies who stand for equality of GLBT's in the workplace.
