Synopsis Below Or Read "Gay in Egypt" Report.
If you are a male homosexual living in Egypt, you're one step away from being a guest of the government and the accommodations are not pleasant. The Egyptian "Morality Police" are everywhere, they are watching the streets, they listen on the phone and scouring the web. They target homosexual men
and ready to pounce at any moment. Should you be who they decide
to pounce on, your life will be forever changed and the meaning hell
on earth will become a reality. Past six months an intense crackdown
on gay men has kept police busy. They have snared numerous gay
men who used the internet to meet others for paid or unpaid sex or
posting gay oriented material. Gay men recently caught in this trap
have been arrested, jailed for months awaiting their day in court and
with rights are non-existent. They almost always are found guilty and
have been sentenced from three months to fifteen months in prison.

May of this year, the Morality Police, Soldiers and State Security Forces
who numbered over a hundred gathered along the River Nile in Zamalek, Cairo. In the very early morning hours they raided the Queen Boat Discotheque.

Eye-witness accounts said, the gay men arrested they were verbally ridiculed, beaten, dragged to waiting vans and then physically thrown into vans. In total 40 arrests made at the Queen Boat Disco.  Police then proceeded to three nearby cites and they made an additional 22 arrests. Arriving at the police station
each man was subjected to an invasive examinations to determine if any signs of anal penetration were present. Only 10 of the men were released and the remaining 52 have
remained in prison to this day. It must have been a horrific experience for
the detainees, their families and their friends. Reports of police inciting
other prisoners to torment and harass the gay men. As they just stood by
watching prisoners attacking the detainee's and did absolutely nothing to
stop the assaults. Egyptian prisons are notorious for obtaining confessions
by torture. Reports are that some of the men were being tortured by police
to gain confessions from them.

Since the mens arrests, grave concern for the gay men has spread world
wide. Amnesty International, was the first Human Rights Organizations investigate the arrests, the men's condition, to release statements condemning the men's arrests and conditions. Human Rights Watch, The International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission and European Union also issued statements condemning the Egyptian Government action. Efforts have fallen on deaf ears as the men remain in prison.

The prosecutor has referred the 52 men to State Security Court, whose verdicts can not be appealed.
Egypt has no laws against homosexuality, but, the gay men are charged under Egyptian Public Morality Laws with Propagating Extremist Ideas, Sparking Civil Strife, Practicing Debauchery With Men and Exploiting the Islamic Religion. Trails began this week, July 17th, and has sent panic through out Egypt's Gay Community and internet sites have closed for fear of recriminations. Some defendants covered their face with towels when entering the courtroom. Their families lash out at journalists taking photographs of the men. Egyptian news media have been relentless in attacks on the men and in their condemnation of their homosexuality. Printing names, occupations, employers and some of the men's pictures.

TBC has closely followed and reported on this terrible situation from the first arrests made in February.
We were one of the first GLBT news services to report on the Egyptian police witch hunt of gay men by
the use of the internet to entrap or snare gay men using chat rooms, personals and personal homepages. We have included articles, press releases, statements by human rights organizations and eye-witness first hand accounts. Posting updates of comprehensive and detailed news coverage, on the whole story. This  is the most disgraceful violation of human rights of gay men by state government officials and police.
